Gamefish species: smallmouth & largemouth bass

Island Lake is a large, rocky lake with miles of shoreline to fish & explore and ideal habitat for the lake's premier gamefish - the smallmouth bass. The big lake has numerous structural features to attract and hold bass, including rocky shoals, scattered islands, sunken humps, fast breaking shorelines, shoreline cover (logs / beaver lodges) - but little or no weedgrowth. Effective tactics for Island Lake smallies, fish which have topped the 7-pound mark (but average 1-1/2 to 2 pounds), include casting lipped / diving crankbaits and in-line spinners (Mepps Aglia & Aglia Long, Blue Fox Vibrax) around the rocks, or fishing plastic worms near cover.

In the evening, off the mouth of Loon Creek where there is some limited weedgrowth and a fast-breaking sand bar, consistent smallmouth actions awaits (and the occasional largemouth bass). Fishing a live frog here or out from any of the many shoreline beaver lodges will produce plenty of bass, including some of Island Lake's largest fish.

Early in the morning or under the midday sun, bass can be caught right off the dock using live baits or small, dark plastic worms. Because you are right on top of the bass, a quiet approach is a must. Through the course of a day's fishing, pristine Island Lake will reveal its unspoiled beauty, fauna and flora in degrees to observant visitors and photographers.
